In
the context of the modern European organic farming systems, the main aims of
INTERCROP are to:
|
|
·
Identify benefits and obstacles for the far more
extensive and flexible use of intercropping of arable crops in the EU in
order to resolve both the technical and socio-economic aspects.
·
Increase the knowledge on the multifunctional role of
intercropping: production level and stability, resource use, environmental
impacts, and product quality of intercrops.
·
To develop a simulation model for modelling grain
legume-cereal intercrops, which can be used in the design of intercrops and
strategic planning of cropping systems with intercrops.
·
Design and test new methods for intercropping.
·
To carry out on-farm demonstration activities.

The
project consists of six inter-related workpackages (WP)
that are made up of tasks each involving several partners. The
INTERCROP consortia have significant expertise covering many related
research areas, such as crop ecology, plant nutritional physiology, nutrient
cycling, grain quality, cropping systems research, crop modelling and
organic farming, among others. This expertise ensures the correct management
of the tasks related to the different Workpackages.
