Workpackage 1: Survey and demonstration on-farm

The main objectives of this Workpackage are:

  • Description of current grain legume cultivation (sole crops, mixed crops) in organic farming via survey.

  • Increase the knowledge and awareness of intercropping systems in organic farming with special emphasis to cereal-grain legume-systems using on-farm demonstrations.

In order to meet these objectives, the Workpackage is divided in two sub-packages, each of them involving different partners as well as requiring different methodology:

  • Workpackage 1.1 (Partners 5, 1, 3, 4, 7): Survey on the use of intercropped systems in organic farming by the assistance of control bodies and/or advisory services. Surveys will be carried out with standardised questionnaires in the five countries involved in the project. A minimum of 20 farms per country, chosen by regional aspects and farm structure among other considerations will be surveyed.

  • Workpackage 1.2 (Partners 5, 4, 7): Establishment of demonstration plots for cereal-grain legume-intercrops on practical farms in Germany, France and Italy, in co-operation with advisors organisations and farmers associations. In these demonstration plots, grain yield and economical data will be assessed and documented.

Professor Dr. Peter von Fragstein und Niemsdorff (pvf@wiz.uni-kassel.de) from University of Kassel is the partner responsible for this Workpackage.
